Things to watch out for in 2015 in the Latin America telecom market

Mexico

  • The new Telecom Law, approved in 2014, will shake the Mexican market in 2015
  • The 700 MHz LTE wholesale network was auctioned and it is projected it will need US$10 billion to get deployed within the next 10 years
  • AT&T announced the acquisition of local mobile operator Iusacell; regulatory authorities need to approve it in 2015
  • Due to the new Telecom Law and the 700 MHz LTE wholesale network, the MVNO market is projected to grow significantly in 2015
  • Forced by the new Telecommunications Law, América Móvil is scheduled to sell some of its assets in the Mexican market to reduce its market dominance. Which assets, when and how they will be sold is still unclear

Brazil

  • Telefónica acquired GVT in 2015; next year the Spanish operator intends to consolidate both operations under the Telefónica brand
  • Claro (América Móvil), Embratel and NET will finally become just one entity under the Claro brand in 2015
  • TIM and Oi merger soap opera will continue in 2015

Argentina

  • The Argentinean Digital Law allows operators to enter the Paid TV market in 2015
  • Mobile operators recently obtained 4G spectrum. Networks will be launched in 2015

Honduras

  • The 700 MHz spectrum auction for LTE is schedule for 2015
  • Hondutel is seeking a partner who can bring financial resources as well as technical expertise to upgrade its network and business

Chile

  • The 700 MHz licenses auctioned this year cannot be used by the operators as the whole process is still on the courts of law
  • Unknown destiny for VTR and Nextel spectrum assets. In 2015 the secondary spectrum market will be a reality
  • The National Infrastructure Plan being currently discussed might mean US$ 22 billon of investment between 2015 and 2020

Colombia

  • The 700 MHz spectrum auction was schedule for 2015. However, some operator think they will have to wait until 2016
  • UNE and Tigo (Millicom) merged their operations; the Tigo brand will be used in 2015

Peru

  • Bitel finally started operations with a 3G network
  • The 700 MHz LTE spectrum auction is scheduled for 2015
  • MVNOs regulation was approved. The MVNO market should start developing in 2015

Ecuador

  • New Telecommunications Law will change market in 2015
  • Movistar y Claro obtained LTE licenses; ideally they would be deploying their LTE networks in 2015

Costa Rica

  • The government will auction 40 MHz in the 1,800 MHz band and 30 MHz in the 1,900/2,100 MHz bands
  • ICE is expanding its operations in Central America after launching enterprise services in Nicaragua it might become Hondutel’s partner in Honduras

Cuba

  • Given recent developments, the telecommunications market could open up

El Salvador

  • Number portability will arrive in 2015
  • The government will auction 40 MHz in the 1,700-2,100 MHz (AWS) y 1,900 MHz bands, which could be used for LTE and 3G

Guatemala

  • Movistar (Telefónica) launched LTE; Tigo will do so in 2015

Panama

  • Most likely operators will launch LTE in 2015

Paraguay

  • AWS spectrum auction has been delayed to 2015

Venezuela

  • Movilnet, Movistar (Telefónica) and DirectTV received LTE spectrum. All operators have already announced investment plans to launch 4G networks in 2015

Caribbean

  • Cable & Wireless acquired Columbus Networks
  • A new network operator will be launched in Bahamas as the market is opening up
